Description

Krobo Beads Necklace – Korle kaa, in deep blue and red chevron designs. I finish my beads using waxed cotton cords, fastened with an adjustable slide knot.

The necklaces are light weight, approximately 14grams, despite the bold sized beads.

Necklace length is 55cm approxi and will slip comfortably over the adult head.

The oval rings connectors are the highlights of these new necklace jewellery designs. What is special about them is, I found them in a shop selling off faulty jewellery at marked down prices. So, I handpicked them, and reassembled the interesting parts into these stunning jewellery designs.

How Artisans Craft your Krobo Beads

I handpick these stunning and sizeable African trade Krobo beads directly from Krobo Odumase, Southern Ghana. The local young men are usually the ones that collect discarded glass for recycling.

The rescued glass is washed, then crushed in wooden motars using wooden hand held pestels. Crushed glass comes in different grades such as fine or coarse.  These results in the different textures either felt or seen on most recycled glass beads.

Handmade clay moulds large enough to hold several clay moulds at once are heated to very high temperatures using wood or coal fire. The crushed glass powder is poured into individual clay moulds, about 20 holes formed inside a singe mould. A verticle poke in the middle forms the bead hole, about 3mm wide.

Recylced glass bead sizes range between 10mm – 35mm x 55mm sizes.

How the intricate designs are created on recycled glass beads

The intricate hand painted line art on the beads, are formed through a chemical process called oxidation. It permanently fixes the hand painted colourings into the recycled molton glass powder when it is fired under intense heat.

Whenever you buy, or are gifted with one of my beautifully crafted Krobo beads jewellery to wear, I would like you to remember the hardwork that went into crafting each bead.

There is always something special about every single bead you pick. For this reason, I am very proud to be Ghanaian. And so, I that hope you enjoy wearing my colourful handmade jewellery from Ghana, Africa.

Recycled glass beads are sources of livelihood for local Ghanaians

Bead making and the manufacture of handmade recycled beads are a source of livelihood for the local people who live within the Krobo Adumase region of southern Ghana.

The women for instance, trade in the Ghana Krobo recylced beads by promoting, distributing and selling these gorgeous traditional beads. It is a has become their form of livelihood from which they support their families.

That is why I always endeavour to pay the asking price for these Ghanaian trade beads.
